Co-Chair Column, February, 2016, Louise “Lou” Fischer

On Jan 11, 2016, I proudly accepted the nomination to serve as Female Co-Chair of Alice B. Toklas LGBT Democratic Club.  In 7 years on the board, I served as a committee Co-Chair for 6 years:  Field, Field, Finance, Finance, PAC and PAC – yes, I did each position twice in a row….redundancy is a good thing, redundancy is a good thing…With Male Co-Chair, Brian Leubitz as my 7th “Alice husband”, I am the “Elizabeth Taylor” of Alice and I probably broke the record for highest number of husbands at Alice.

While every one of my husbands is special and every board member is unique and wonderful, I’m excited to be working with Brian, a long time board member and mentor.  Together we bring a dedication (or slight obsession?) to organization, an insatiable love of spreadsheets, insistence on using open source software and applications whenever possible and a pure love of voter data that can be quantified, crunched or otherwise reduced to binary form.

We will be presiding over one of the most culturally diverse Alice boards ever and have followed through on our commitment to add more women and people of color to both our full and affiliate boards.  Alice is committed to developing young leaders, and now we range from college age to…well, a lot older and let’s leave it at that.

2016 will be the biggest and best election year since 2008 (and 2000 before it and 1992 before it….clearly there’s a pattern.)   While the rest of the country will be focusing on Hillary or Bernie versus whatever clown comes out of the tiny Republican car first, we in Alice are energized by the exciting local races in June and November.

We are looking forward to completing our endorsement slate in March, but already we have early endorsed former Alice co-chair Supervisor Scott Wiener to replace long-time friend of Alice Mark Leno in the State Senate. Scott will be an effective leader for San Francisco in Sacramento, bring his history of creative solutions to a broad range of issues facing the state. And of course, we are all looking forward to supporting our endorsed candidate for Senate, Attorney General Kamala Harris.

But beyond our early endorsements, March’s endorsements are sure to be full of strong leaders. San Francisco offers any number of talented leaders up and down the ballot. From incumbents in the Assembly all the way to long-time Alice Board member Alex Randolph, who will be running for re-election to the Community College Board of Trustees.

Supervisorial Districts 1, 3, 5, 7, 9 and 11 will be on the November ballot and 3 districts (1, 9 and 11) are “open seats” with no incumbent, so this will be interesting. Oh, and then there’s the always exciting Democratic County Central Committee races. With all this excitement on the June ballot, be sure to look out for the Alice slate card for a strong batch of endorsements.

Please join us at our General Membership meetings (see website for dates) at our new temporary location, 518 Valencia Street (at 16th) and follow our website and calendar for exciting events throughout 2016.  If you see a bunch of people in stylish purple Alice T-shirts in your neighborhood during the election cycles, feel free to join in, the more the merrier!
