Alice No on 8 Event
Saturday, November 1
Bucheon Gallery
398 Grove

Defeating proposition 8 is a top priority for Alice. With a substantial monetary deficit, the campaign needs money to broadcast its new ads which have proven effective in polling. Alice's event will be a fun way to support this urgent need.

Because time is of the essence, we strongly recommend that you donate as soon as possible through our direct link at Equality California: www.eqca.org/mypage/Alice.

As an incentive, Alice and friends will match the first $5,000 of the money raised to fight Prop 8. So get your donation in as soon as possible!

November Co-Chairs' Report

Julius Turman Susan Christian
The Election of our Lives,
the Fight for our Identity

There is no doubt that the results of this November’s elections will be historic. As Americans, Californians and San Franciscans, we must each take measure of our ballots and understand that no matter the result, the ramifications will last for generations. As co-chairs, we are proud of Alice’s thoughtful endorsement process. Our recommendations rest on a foundation of democratic principles, which we all deserve and need during these times of financial and identity crises.

It cannot be emphasized enough that America's best hopes for the future rest with Senator Barack Obama. Senator Obama’s call for change is inspirational and solution-driven. His election to the Presidency would not only be a first step in setting our country on the road to recovery, but it would be a symbolic step in assuring Americans of diverse walks of life that they are accepted and it would begin to heal a long open wound in America’s history. As we struggle in times of economic crisis, a continuing and expensive war in Iraq and a foreign policy that sets us further adrift from the society of all nations, it is obvious that Senator McCain, Governor Palin and the Republican Party do not even understand the situation we face. Even more troubling is that they offer no plan to resolve the issues, but concentrate on attacking the character of an outstanding human being, such as Senator Obama.

In California, we face Proposition 8, aimed squarely at further diminishing the dignity of the members of the LGBT community. Proposition 8 strikes at the very identity of LGBT persons in that it threatens to treat them differently than their fellow Californians because of their sexual orientation. It discriminates against persons who want to share their lifelong commitment and responsibility to each other through marriage by rewriting the State’s Constitution to wipe away the right of same-sex couples to marry. As LGBT persons, we must be galvanized as one – to stand up and defeat this initiative. Talk to your family, friends and co-workers. Let them know that voting in favor of Prop 8 would be historical in that it would for the first time in our State’s history, expressly single out one group for discrimination. Please donate to the No on 8 campaign at http://www.eqca.org/mypage/Alice so that we may raise the necessary funds to counter the misleading ads regarding the education of children and the risk of tax-exempt status of churches, that the Yes campaign are promulgating. But most of all, vote No on 8 on November 4th.

Lastly, San Franciscans are presented with many choices in our local elections. The battle rages on in defining a “progressive.” There are many who create different standards and litmus tests to divide those who should be united. As co-chairs of Alice, we are proud to proclaim that we are a club dedicated to diverse candidates with diverse opinions. We have identified candidates and measures that offer solutions and answers to the problems faced by San Francisco. We believe in electing a government that is focused on the improvement of society, better services to our people and sustainable economic and cultural growth. We ask our members to vote for and advocate for the same by following the club’s positions.

This election represents many ways in which our nation, our state and our country will define itself. It is an election that will forever change our lives and form our identity. When you go to the polls on November 4th, please take your Alice slate card with you and use it as your voting guide. The candidates and measures endorsed represent the best of San Francisco and our future.

Reese's World: Perspectives from the Editor
    "Don't Stop Believin'
Don't Stop Til We Get Enough!"

    by Reese Aaron Isbell, M.P.P.

    Reese Aaron Isbell
Look, we don't have much time left.  The election is almost here.  You don't need a long essayist article to tell you what you already know.

So here's the deal.  I'll keep this short.  Very short.

We have to win on November 4th.

And we can.  But only, only, if we continue the fight at 150%.

I know it's been a hard long year.  A hard long 2 years, 3 years, many, many years.  And the campaign never seems to end.

    And it's almost over.

We can rest on November 5th.

But right now, we have too much invested in our lives for this election of our lifetimes to sit idly by and watch our rights denied and our country spiraling downward.

We have to keep believing in the hope that Obama and Milk and King and so many others have reminded us day in and day out to have.

It is that hope, that shining light, that will guide us to victory.

And until we get across that finish line, we won't stop til we get exactly enough to be equal in a fair and just and strong land.

So get up out of your seat and get back out there and finish the job that we have to do.

And if you don't know what to do, well, click here.

    No on Proposition 8 Update

5 Things You Can Do To Defeat Prop 8

Defeating Prop 8 -- the marriage ban -- will require thousands of people working together across California to educate and rally voters to Vote No on Prop 8. Here are five things you can do to help defeat this harmful initiative. By doing even one thing on this list, you will make a difference.

Give. The fight to defeat Prop 8 is going to be hard-won. It's going to take passion, commitment, time, and extensive resources. Please give as much as you can to the campaign today and in the coming weeks. We need to raise enough money to wage a massive public education effort to convince the majority of Californians, the most populous state in the nation, to Vote No on Prop 8. Every dollar counts, so please contribute today and again in the coming weeks.

Volunteer. This effort takes committed individuals working hard at the grassroots level. We need volunteers from across the state to hand out information at local events and make phone calls to voters educating them about defeating Prop 8-the marriage ban. Sign-up to volunteer your time to educate the public about how Prop 8 harms loving and committed couples across California.

Talk. Talk to your friends, family, coworkers, fellow church-goers, neighbors, classmates -- anyone and everyone -- about Voting No on Prop 8. You have a wide circle of influence, use it! By simply talking to people, you increase awareness about the issue in your community and can help influence public opinion. The more people we talk to about this issue, the more votes we have on our side. It's a simple, cheap, and effective way to help defeat Prop 8.

Write. One of the most effective ways to create change and influence people is by telling your personal story. Write a letter to the editor of your local newspaper, or submit an article to a newsletter or blog and tell your community why Prop 8 is so harmful to you and those you love. We need to put a face on this issue. This isn't just about politics and laws, this is about our friends and family -- those closest to us.

Register. It all comes down to this. Make your voice count and get engaged. Register to vote NOW and get your friends and family to register too. And make sure to show up at the polls on November 4. We need Californians who support fairness and equality to vote in November against this harmful change to our constitution.

    Armageddon

“More important than the presidential election” That’s what evangelical leader Charles W. Colson and Family Research Council President Tony Perkins said about Prop 8, calling it the “decisive last stand” in this morning’s New York Times:

“California, they say, sets cultural trends for the rest of the country and even the world. If same-sex marriage is allowed to become entrenched there, they warn, there will be no going back.”
So, they’ll stop at nothing to provoke a final tidal wave of attention and money before the election. Last week, they tried it with an ad that reaches a new low. Their new, horrible, abusive ad uses unauthorized images of children without their parents’ knowledge or consent. And they’re proud of it. From their website:
"Our new ad gives us great hope."

"As strong as this new ad is, however, it won't be able to reverse our downward trend in the polls if voters only see it once for every two times that they see ads from our opponents. The future of traditional marriage remains in grave, grave danger. If we aren't successful in raising a minimum of $2 million more to supplement our advertising buy for next week, we will lose. The more we can raise above $2 million, the better our chances of prevailing will be. It is as simple as that."
By contrast, we are staying true to our core values and message: Prop 8 is wrong and unfair. We cannot be lulled into thinking that voters will see through their transparent, dirty tactics. To defeat Prop 8, we need to give more and do more.

Their goal is to raise $2 million dollars in the next few days. They have a $1 million match on their site right now. We have every reason to believe they’ll raise $2 million today alone.

We need to match them dollar for dollar in this crucial final stretch. Donate today by clicking here.
