    January Co-Chairs' Report
    Time to Pass the Baton

    Rebecca Prozan Julius Turman
After two adrenalin-filled, ecstatic, frustrating, thrilling, funny, energetic, high spirited, exuberant, trying, testing, and yes, sometimes long years, I end my two year term as co-chair of Alice this January, 2008.  I am humbled by and also deeply appreciate the opportunity to serve the country's oldest lgbt democratic club.

I have never served on a Board with such hard working, caring, dedicated, and devoted folks as those who serve on the Alice Board.  Board members care about everything -- from the most minute details of our events to the process used for endorsements to what should or should not be presented at Alice's membership meetings to the future of our City.  Alice members are fortunate to have elected these fine individuals to represent this historic institution.   And I am grateful to have served with them.

Besides myself, there are a number of individuals who, after many years and some not-so-many years have decided to leave our Board.  A thousand thank yous (as if that is enough) to John Lazar; Ken Cleaveland; Jim Maloney; Tia Martinez; Dan Bernal; David Weinreich; Greg Flores; Jen Drake; Jody Hoenninger; Nora Dye; Rafael Mandelman; MIguel Bustos; and Joan Roughgarden.  Some of these folks will be serving on the Alice Emeritus Board and others will just be active members of Alice.  Thank you for all you've done to help Alice during your respective tenures.

I have every confidence that the 2008 Board will bring all the care, time and devotion that Boards past have brought and more.  You will learn more about them in the coming months, but trust me, the nominating committee, made up of myself, Michael Costa, Reese Isbell, John Newsome, and Scott Wiener have ensured that Alice will continue its long tradition of promoting the best and brightest of our diverse community to serve on the Alice Board.

By the time of my departure, Alice's financial outlook is stronger than it has been for a long time.  Part of that is thanks to Michael Costa, who works diligently as our treasurer to be our own personal financial watchdog.  Another part of that is the individuals who keep giving to Alice events and joining our membership ranks.  And speaking of Alice events, I was quite proud to play a role in the two news breaking Alice breakfasts, the first year hosting Gubernatiorial Candidate Phil Angelides and the second year having First Lady hopeful Elizabeth Edwards.  Edwards' decision to announce her position on gay marriage was historic and will be highlighted for years to come.

We have continued to support our friends and allies in every election in the past two years.  Watching Nancy Pelosi become Speaker of the House probably tops the list.  And of course, helping the re-election efforts of Supervisor Bevan Dufty, District Attorney Kamala Harris, and Mayor Gavin Newsom.  Watch these future stars School Board Members Kim Shree Maufas and Hydra Mendoza, as Alice helped elect these folks as well.

To my co-chairs -- Scott Wiener and Julius Turman -- I owe deep gratitude.  Both exemplify everything that is right about our community.  Thanks to both of them for teaching me about leadership and friendship, values and loyalty.

Thank you Scott and Julius, thank you to the entire Alice Board and membership for all you've done to make Alice stronger and better than in years past.  I won't be going far, participating in the Alice Finance and Slate Card committee, and as Past Co-Chair.

Here's to a successful 2008!  Best of luck to the new Alice 2008 Board!!

    IN MEMORIAM

    Phil Frank

Our Bay Area community lost a timeless figure in our history when Phil Frank, cartoonist for the San Francisco Chronicle passed away in September. His daily animated record of the comings and goings of our community and his Farley characters will be greatly missed and treasured always. Photo by Alain McLaughlin Photography.

    Jim Rivaldo

In October, legendary San Francisco political and community figure Jim Rivaldo passed away. Mr. Rivaldo was a close personal friend of Assemblyman Leno and a former aide to Supervisor Harvey Milk. During his stellar career he played a pivotal role in empowering and electing openly-LGBT officials throughout the Bay Area, and in the election of every African-American candidate in San Francisco in the 1970's and 80's. He will be remembered for his indomitable spirit and passion for life. Photo by Bill Wilson.

Leno Working On Oil Spill Cleanup Efforts

Within hours following the spill of 58,000 gallons of toxic bunker fuel from the Cosco Busan into the San Francisco Bay, Assemblyman Mark Leno participated in a number of briefings given by the Unified Command and others responsible for the clean-up efforts. He joined officials in a helicopter tour of areas in San Francisco, Marin, and the East Bay to view the full scope of the contamination to further develop containment strategies.

It was clear from the outset that important questions needed to be answered and that ultimately, more must be done to protect our invaluable coastlines and marine wildlife. Leno and Assemblywoman Loni Hancock called for an emergency oversight hearing of the Assembly Natural Resources Committee within the first week after the spill to review the causes of the accident and the condition of the response efforts.

"Each of us has been reminded of the Bay's central importance to our region's wildlife, economy, fishing fleet, tourism industry, and human health, and its place in the hearts of the people of Northern California," Leno commented. "While deeply saddened by the destruction caused by the spill, I remain vigilant in pursuit of answers and will rally every available resource to clean up the effects on our precious natural resources."

You can learn more about the clean-up efforts and what you can do to help by visiting Leno's website.

Leno Strives to Help the Greater Community

Assemblyman Mark Leno stays extremely active in the local community, while continuing his strong leadership in Sacramento. In an effort to best represent and assist the people of his district, he has created a number of public events meant to help people on a regular and ongoing basis. Here are just a few he has recently produced for the community!

Free Career & Health Resources Fair

Assemblyman Leno brought together more than 30 Bay Area employers and 45 health professionals on August 3rd to provide career and health information for many San Franciscans. Participants gathered information about potential employers while making contacts that could lead to new jobs. They were also able to get a free health check-up from Bay Area physicians and medical specialists.

Leno stated, "This event brought local businesses and health care professionals together under one roof to address two significant needs of our community - jobs and health care. We provided a one-stop shop for the community that will help improve both their physical and economic health."

Fighting Crime and Addressing Violence in the City

Responding to the rise in crime and violence in San Francisco, Leno held a Youth and Gang Violence Summit. The roundtable discussion brought together those working in city neighborhoods with state personnel to determine ways the state can best direct assistance to those working on the ground to combat violence on a daily basis.

First-Of-Its-Kind Free AIDS Housing Resource Fair

With more than 2,500 homeless people HIV-positive in San Francisco and 13,000 more on the verge of becoming homeless, an affordable place to live is the #1 unmet need of San Franciscans living with HIV/AIDS.

In August, Leno was proud to present the first-of-its-kind resource fair to bring those in need together with organizations that can help. Leno co-hosted the event at the LGBT Community Center along with the AIDS Housing Alliance of San Francisco. Various local government and non-profit agencies provided direct service to those in immediate need, as well as those looking for more long-term solutions.

    4th Annual Young Women's Conference

For the fourth year in a row, Leno invited hundreds of young women between the ages of 14-19 years old to attend an inspirational conference in November specifically geared toward them. The all-day event included workshops on self-empowerment, resume writing, college opportunities and preparation, dealing with grief and loss, making positive health choices for life, and meeting with women who serve as role models. This event, entitled "Own It - Youth Body, Mind, and Life!" was again co-sponsored by Planned Parenthood Golden Gate and worked in collaboration with a number of other community-based organization whose mission is improving and empowering the lives of young women.

Assembly Select Committee on the Preservation of California's Entertainment Industry

Leno hosted the Assembly Select Committee on the Preservation of California's Entertainment Industry in October, bringing state officials together with those who work in the City's entertainment industry. "The film industry is a treasured part of California history, and today it creates thousands of good paying jobs and generates tens of millions of dollars in tax revenue," stated Leno. "We must be more aggressive in keeping this lucrative industry within California."

Leno Sponsors Barrels for Firefighters Toy Program

For over 50 years, the San Francisco Firefighters have been dedicated to helping children, year-round, through the nation's oldest Toy Program of its kind. In 2004, 300 firefighters and friends distributed over 200,000 toys to more than 40,000 disadvantaged children throughout our City. Each holiday season, Assemblyman Leno sponsors barrels in his district office to help with the collection. If you would like to supply toys for the program, invite the toy drive to an office party, or learn more about what you can do to help, stop by your local firehouse or contact the Firefighters Toy Program directly at 415-777-0440.

    Upcoming Events:

Leno to Host 1st Transgender Health and Resource Fair

On January 25th, 2008, Leno will hold the first health and resource fair dedicated to the transgender community. In addition to providing health screenings and disseminating other health-related information, the fair will provide community residents with access to resources offering culturally sensitive services in the areas of economic empowerment, employment readiness, and individual rights. For more information, please call (415) 557-3013.

Leno to Host Assembly Select Committee on Youth Violence Prevention

Leno continues his efforts to combat violence by bringing the Assembly Select Committee on Youth Violence Prevention to San Francisco in February 2008.

AB 1056, which Leno authored along with Assemblyman Jared Huffman (D-San Rafael), was signed into law in October. The measure was signed into law in September.

    LGBT Seniors in National Spotlight

In 2006, Leno authored AB 2920, a first of its kind law which encourages assistance for LGBT seniors. The measure went into effect this year and provides for culturally sensitive training for those who work with the elderly to ensure that our seniors get the care they deserve. The issue got national attention in this New York Times story.
