June Co-Chairs' Report

Rebecca ProzanScott Wiener June's primary election is in full swing, and only days away. Coming up on the 6th in fact.

On the street, people still ask whom they should vote for Governor. Alice, the California Democratic Party, and our own Assemblyman Mark Leno have endorsed Phil Angelides because he best represents Democratic values: supporting LGBT equality, fully funding education, increasing access to health care and protecting California's environment. Check out Alice's full slate of endorsements in our Endorsements Section of this newsletter.

We've said it before and we'll say it again. Alice is fortunate to have a current Co-Chair, former Co-Chairs and current Board Members running for election and re-election to the San Francisco Democratic Central Committee. These include, in District 13: Robert Haaland, Rafael Mandelman, Laura Spanjian and Scott Wiener; and in District 12, Connie O'Connor. Alice remains strong because we support our own. These people continue to work hard for us, and they deserve our support. Tell your friends!

Alice's field program is in full swing. Our slate cards have already been delivered to absentee voters in many households. For the past two weekends, Alice volunteers have been seen passing out literature to voters on the street at Café Flore. We started to walk precincts, and we'll continue to both educate and remind voters to vote and/or get to the polls for June 6th.

In the meantime, Alice is also focused on the November election. This past month, our membership voted resoundingly to re-elect Bevan Dufty as Supervisor of District 8. Alice's participation in 2002 was key to Bevan's success and we intend to play the same role in his re-election. We're proud to support Bevan as he has worked hard on our issues: helping LGBT youth, creating community benefit districts in the Castro and in Noe Valley, ensuring appropriate attention to meth and its affect to the LGBT community, and many, many more. Look for Alice to make sure Bevan triumphs in November.

Pride is just weeks away. And nothing is more appropriate than this year's theme: Commemorate, Educate, Liberate, Celebrate. By the time of Pride, the primary election will be over, and San Francisco will focus to ensure statewide Democratic victories in November. The annual Alice B. Toklas LGBT Democratic Club Annual Breakfast will be held Sunday, June 25th, 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. at the Sir Francis Drake Hotel, 450 Powell Street. If you haven't purchased your ticket yet, please go to www.alicebtoklas.org and do so. And then sell one to a friend.

And please don't forget to vote June 6, 2006.

Reese's World: Perspectives from the Editor
The Definition of GOTV
Talking the Talk and Walking the Precinct

by Reese Aaron Isbell, M.P.P.

Reese Aaron Isbell My fellow Graduates:

Today is the first day of the rest of our lives! I am honored to be here today, with you, to speak on the opportunities that await us after our years of schooling, study, and backbreaking legwork.

As we move into the future (And the future is ours for the making!). Yes, as we move into the future, there will be risks; there will be successes; there will be heartbreaks. But we will persevere! For we have persevered through these years already. And they have been at times quite difficult. Losses, triumphs, more losses, hopes, and dreams. But we have survived and we will continue to do so.

One of the most important pieces of knowledge that we have gained from our years of education is the wisdom of GOTV. Getting Out The Vote. Yes, GOTV is one of our core principles we know to utilize when it's crunch time.

Webster's Dictionary defines GOTV as… well, actually, Webster's Dictionary doesn't have it listed. But we know, yes, we activists, schooled in the years of training that we have done, know what GOTV means. GOTV means everything to us and our principles. GOTV means the difference between a future of hope and possibilities, or a future of difficult roads ahead. Either way, we know GOTV is the principle that will shape our work.

So as part of that core principle of GOTV, we 'Talk the Talk.' We talk that talk by speaking to our friends, and our neighbors, and our fellow graduates, and our friends of friends. We make sure that they are registered to vote. We make sure that they know where the candidates stand. We make sure they know who will be supportive of us and who will be in opposition to our lives. We make sure we get them to talk that talk as well. We show up at table opportunities and talk the talk in our community. We phone bank throughout every evening. We stand on street-corners and shout it to the rooftops. We do so much talking that we lose our voice.

And furthermore, we also 'Walk the Walk.' We continue our GOTV by taking our talk to the streets. We carry our talk from door to door, from grocery store to coffee shop, from diner to community event. We cover every precinct in town and then we cover them again. We talk and we walk and we get the vote out.

Yes, we have learned a great deal over the years. And we have gained so much. This time is ours and the future is what we make of it! Will you Get Out The Vote with me? Join me as we not only Talk the Talk, but also Walk the Precinct. Join me in doing what we know what best to do. Join me for our future. Thank you.

Now get out there and GOTV!

From Senate Candidate Mike Nevin to Alice

Dear Alice Members,

Campaigns are tremendous expenditures of time and resources. They're long convoluted journeys that take you to interesting places to meet interesting people. My journey has been precisely this and I am proud to say that Alice's endorsement was one of the highlights of my campaign. Every endorsement matters because campaigns in San Francisco perform best at the grassroots level. However, no organizational endorsement is as important or valuable as the Alice endorsement and that's why your support for my campaign means the world to me. Thank you.

I'd like to take this opportunity to give you an update on the campaign. We're racing to the finish line and Election Day, June 6, is almost upon us. I am happy to report that The San Francisco Chronicle, the Bay Area Reporter and several San Mateo papers have endorsed me. I can feel the momentum building, but the most important thing you can do for my campaign is vote. However, beyond voting, my campaign also needs volunteers to walk precincts and make some phone calls. Please feel free to call my campaign headquarters at 650.794.2000 or visit my website if you want to get involved www.mikenevin.com.

This year's primary election is an important prelude to the general election in the fall. In the fall Democrats, all across the nation, will have an unprecedented opportunity to reclaim the Senate, the House of Representatives, the California Governor's seat and much more. That's why voter participation in this primary is exceptionally important. We need to elect strong Democrats that can get the job done and take on Republicans here in California and in Washington D.C.

I pledge to you to be just that type of Democrat should I be elected by the Democrats in my district. I promise that I'll work with Mark Leno to pass his marriage bill again and again and again until it is signed into law. I pledge that I won't vote to give our current Governor, or any Governor, carte blanche on the state's budget. We need to protect the Democratic priorities that are too often neglected. Finally, I'll work tirelessly to tackle the problems that affect our community: affordable housing, transportation, education, healthcare, environmental protection and much more.

The only missing ingredient is your vote. June 6th is Election Day and whether you vote absentee or at the polls, I am asking for your vote. Thanks again for all of your support. I am glad that Alice is at my side as this journey concludes.

AfterWords from Supervisor Bevan Dufty

From the Editor: Supervisor Bevan Dufty has been endorsed by Alice for his bid for reelection to Supervisor, District 8 and spoke to Alice at the May Membership Meeting.

Dear Alice Members:

Thank you for your early endorsement of my reelection.

Alice was instrumental during my 2002 campaign for Supervisor and I am honored to again have your support.

I’ve collaborate with Alice on many issues as Supervisor and I am excited to continue our partnership as we look to make San Francisco great and champion a broad array of LGBT issues and concerns..

Alice’s vision has inspired me to champion a sustainable Castro.

Whether it is diversity and inclusivity or a Family Resource Center for growing LGBT Families, Alice has been part of my work and agenda.

We have established a Castro Community Benefit District and just this week unveiled my Milk Photographic Tribute to better portray Harvey Milk’s life and legacy in Milk Plaza and the dedication of Jose Sarria Court, our City’s 1st street honoring a living Gay Pioneer.

The re-opening of the Eureka Valley Recreation Center (EVRC) has been a tremendous success as we’ve developed a Queer Youth Collaborative and Supportive Housing for our Transition Youth/Young Adults in the Castro.

You’ve supported my work with the LGBT Center Neighborhood Economic Development Organization (NEDO) and current collaboration for a Transgender Employment Intiative.

I will need Alice’s help to achieve one of my 2nd term goals; establishment of the first world-class Museum as a home for the GLBT Historical Society.

Thank you, Alice for helping me win this job and continue our important work. I welcome your ideas and feedback as we move forward through the campaign (www.bevandufty.com) and in my work at City Hall (bevan.dufty@sfgov.org)

AfterWords from Christopher Daley, Esq.

From the Editor: Mr. Daley of the Transgender Law Center spoke to Alice at the May Membership Meeting.

"Investing in Transgender Economic Development"

Thirteen years after San Francisco passed our comprehensive transgender anti-discrimination ordinance, the economic health of the transgender community is not where it should be. The Transgender Law Center and the San Francisco Bay Guardian recently released a report on employment in the community that is sparking conversations throughout the city.

Thanks to a planning grant from the Women’s Foundation of California, Good Jobs NOW! provides sorely needed data on the economic reality experienced by transgender people and their families. The survey of 194 self-identified transgender people living, working, or looking for work in San Francisco found:

  • Nearly 60% of Good Jobs NOW! respondents earn under $15,300 annually and only 8% earn over $45,900.
  • 40% do not have a bank account of any kind.
  • Only 25% are working full-time, 16% are working part-time, and nearly 9% have no source of income.
  • Over 57% percent report experiencing employment discrimination, but only a little over 12% have taken any kind of action as a result.
  • Just over 42% of respondents live with family or roommates and pay rent (with nearly 7% in Section 8 Housing), but not even 5% own their own residence. 10% self-identify as homeless and another 31% are living in unstable situations. 50% would like career and job counseling in order to explore their options and around 53% percent would like to undergo further education or training in order to enter a new career.
  • At least 9% do not have a high school diploma or GED. 88% of respondents, though, have completed high school with 23% going on to attend some college and more than 32% attaining a college degree of some sort (including 10% of people who have post-graduate degrees).

  • Transgender communities, their allies, and key decision-makers have more opportunity than ever before to turn these numbers around.

Service providers, elected officials, educators, and concerned business owners are taking note of these numbers. Many of them are asking how they can help turn these numbers around. Clearly, concerted efforts are need to target job readiness, hiring, and retention by employers and educators who have taken basic steps to create non-discriminatory environments. And investment, by many of us, is needed to make those efforts possible.

To find out more about how you can participate in this important work, contact TLC Deputy Director, Cecilia Chung at (415) 865-0184 or cecilia@transgenderlawcenter.org

    Open Letter from openhouse

    Dear Alice Members:

I'm writing today to ask for your support for a timely and frankly exciting development that is critical to our community. As you may know, openhouse is a nonprofit organization that has been working since 1998 on building affordable and sensitive retirement living that is welcoming to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) seniors and their friends and family. You can help by going to www.openhouse-sf.org today and clicking the button marked "Advocate Now."

The great news is we are very close to making this dream become a reality. Working in collaboration with AF Evans (www.afevans.com), which is a long term Bay Area housing developer with a laudatory track record in developing high quality, market rate and affordable housing, we now have the chance to build our community's first LGBT senior community with sensitive supportive services.

The location is perfect: one block from the LGBT Community Center at 55 Laguna Street (the former UC Berkeley Extension site). The site is in the heart of a diverse and thriving community, and close to public transportation and other services.

The openhouse piece of the project, consisting of 80 rental units, will include its own building immediately adjacent to a new local community center and an all-new 20,000 square-foot public park and gardens. The AF Evans development on this site is comprised of a total of 328 market rate rental units, with 20% affordable-to-low income households. Several of the historical buildings on the site will be preserved, and the development will be "green" - ensuring that the entire development is environmentally sensitive. This is one of the only rental developments to be built in San Francisco today and the affordability level is higher than the City requirement.

But this unique development needs your support. I urge you to take action today. As you know, any project like this must clear an array of approvals from multiple city and county agencies. As a result, the unqualified support of our elected officials will be critical to realizing our dream of affordable and market-rate rental facilities for our LGBT friends and neighbors.

Please take action by going to www.openhouse-sf.org and click on "Advocate Now." Type in your name and address and a support letter will be sent to Supervisor Bevan Dufty, in whose district this development resides, with a copy to the Planning Department and Mayor's Office. We need to let the City know that we care about our senior community and we want to move forward with this unique opportunity for senior LGBT living in San Francisco.

openhouse will deeply appreciate your support of our efforts. Thanks for taking just a moment to help when we need it most.

    Regards,

    Moli Steinert
    Executive Director
