Violent Attack on Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords is an Attack on All Americans

Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Tucson) was violently attacked today while speaking to her constituents at local event. The attack on Rep. Giffords killed at least six people, including a federal judge. The Alice B. Toklas LGBT Democratic Club wishes Rep. Giffords a speedy recovery and sends its heartfelt condolences to the families of all that were injured in the attack.

When the shooting occurred, Rep. Giffords was participating in the most fundamental and critical aspect of our American democracy, communicating with her constituents at a local grocery store. This shooting sends reverberations throughout our entire system of government, but we simply cannot bend to fear. The growing anti-government sentiment, occasionally stoked for political purposes, when carried to its violent extremes, casts a stain upon our nation.

Rather than succumbing to this violence, we must now come together to continue the hard work and difficult choices that face our nation. We hope that our leaders can move forward in a spirit of unity towards our shared values and the goals of a free and equal United States of America.

The Alice B. Toklas LGBT Democratic Club is the oldest LGBT focused Democractic Club in the nation, having originally formed in 1972. Since that time, Alice has been a consistent and vocal advocate for LGBT rights at the local, state, and federal levels.
