Dear Members of Alice:

It is a critical time for our civil rights and specifically the repeal of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell. Please cut and paste the text below and send it in an email to Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi, by no later than this weekend. It is important to send your emails right away because on Thursday May 13, 2010, the California Assembly passed a resolution by Senator Christine Kehoe that calls for the immediate repeal of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell. Coming right after this bold legislative move, our emails to the Speaker will have tremendous impact. We can’t let Skelton scare the Speaker into silence. This should only take a couple minutes of your time.

Thanks!

Dear Madame Speaker,
Thank you for your strong leadership on national security and civil rights.  We support and join you in your vision for a stronger, safer America.  That is why we are asking for your help at this time

During the week of May 24, I urge you hold a floor vote on HR 1283 which will repeal Don’t Ask Don’t Tell.

Please do not listen to opponents of repeal such as Representative Ike Skelton and others who say they fear for their own political futures and do not want a “tough” vote on HR 1283.  They are being short-sighted and inappropriately placing themselves ahead of the best interests of the country.

Justice delayed is justice denied.  For over 16 years LGBT Americans have suffered the overt discrimination of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell.  That failed policy has cost our nation hundreds of millions of dollars and shattered countless lives.  But the nation has had enough of lies, waste, and fear.

A solid majority of voters across the United States – including those in battleground states – favor immediate repeal of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell.  Recent polls of active duty military servicemembers show that they mirror America and also support immediate repeal of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell.  Voting AYE on HR 1283 to repeal Don’t Ask Don’t Tell is the right thing to do and it reflects the voice of American voters.

Mr. Skelton must not be allowed to perpetrate his personal fear and pre-emptively cast the votes of other members of Congress by preventing a vote on HR 1283.  He does not speak for me.

We need each person to do his/her duty, including you.  I ask you to represent the majority of Americans as well as your constituents who want repeal of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell.  Please schedule and hold the floor vote on HR 1283 and make history by repealing Don’t Ask Don’t Tell in the House.

With respectful thanks,

Member of Alice B. Toklas LGBT Democratic Club
