Our club is deeply saddened by the passing of one of our own. Democratic political activist August J.P. Longo, 65, passed away on Tuesday April 6, 2010, suddenly to the shock of his friends and family. For the past two years, August has served on the Board of Directors of the Alice B. Toklas LGBT Democratic Club. August has been our friend, our ally and to many of us, our political and life mentor.
As a long-time Democratic Party Activist, August was one of the Regional Directors of the California Democratic Party and served as Chair of the Party’s Disability Caucus. In addition to serving on the Board of the Alice B. Toklas LGBT Democratic Club, he was also President of the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Democratic Club and an ex-officio member of the San Francisco Democratic County Central Committee.
August was passionate about ensuring that government fulfills its obligation to work for the people. Mayor Gavin Newsom appointed August to the Human Rights Commission to provide leadership and secure, protect and promote human rights for all San Franciscans. August also served as Commissioner on the Access Appeals Commission and dedicated himself to ensuring that every program, service, benefit, activity and facility operated or funded by the City and County of San Francisco was fully accessible too, and useable by, people with disabilities.
August was a champion for the disabled, elderly, and LGBT communities, and a strong voice in the Democratic Party. Above all else, August was a friend and a political mentor to younger LGBT youth and aspiring LGBT activists. Our dear friend, August Longo, will be sorely missed. Information regarding memorial services will follow.
